They brought us,
they sold us

Gnawa music and the memory of slavery

This series explores the memory of black slavery in Algeria through music and symbolics. It researches the traces left to this day in Algerian culture about black slavery, and tries to bring to the light enslaved people’s narratives. The name of the project is taken from a song named “Boulila”, that tells the complaint of slaves who testify that they were brought from Soudan (current Mali) and sold for very little.
